I opened my Chobani yogurt the other day and saw this quote written on its lid by Jordan Burroughs, “How I train? Hard. How I eat? Simple.” Amazing! Such a small moment really impacted me. I have to admit, I don’t train hard. However, I do believe I work hard. My thought came from not only working hard at what I do as a business owner, but it came from life. Life in general. For the most part, I feel I can make a generalized statement by mentioning that we ALL work hard these days. We juggle our life as employee’s, bosses, parents, students, pet owners, etc. The list is endless isn’t it?
I have always told my clients that food is the fuel we need to support our lifestyle. If you’re like me, you might be running from the moment you wake up until the moment you rest your head on the pillow at night. Why weigh your body down with senseless food? How well do you think you are going to run on food that’s not nutritious for you?
I think we have over used the phrase “clean eating”. What exactly is clean eating? I took to the internet to see if I could find an exact definition. A favorite magazine of mine, Clean Eating, stated, “Clean Eating is not a diet. It’s a happy and healthy lifestyle”. OK, close enough. I made 4 zucchini breads and 1 banana bread just the other day. In mentioning this to a client, she asked, “How is the bread clean eating? Didn’t you use sugar?” Heck yeah! I would rather take the opportunity and make a snack at home that I know my family will enjoy, consist of 5 ingredients, and eaten within a few days, than other snacks found on a grocery shelf. Don’t get me wrong though, we DO have snacks like Goldfish in our pantry.
No, the bread wasn’t exactly “clean”. The family is definitely happy and healthy though. I struggle with the word “clean”, but “simple”? Yes. Everything in moderation and “simple”. To eat simple is to eat uncomplicated, effortless- everything in moderation. Isn’t that what simple means? Don’t we need to apply that to our hectic, chaotic, lifestyles? It’s almost a weight as been lifted off the shoulders. There isn’t this expectation to make kale smoothies everyday! Just eat simple.
